I believe that in this modern day and age social media has had a huge impact on the status quo. Social media has been used as a platform for everything from marketing businesses to sharing memes. Some people have used various social media platforms to bring people together on certain issues, while others unfortunately use it to cyber bully people they may not even know. With all the positives social media brought us, obviously came the negatives; but this all ties into how social media has been used to bring about social change. Sociologists define social change as changes in human interactions and relationships that transform cultural and social institutions. Social media has been able to connect individuals from across the world, this was not possible 20+ years ago, especially not in this magnitude. Being able to communicate with someone who lives across the globe allows one to step into their shoes and see life from their perspective and get a better understanding of societies around the world. but, to not even look at it from a global standpoint, social media has brought about social change in societies of all sizes. due to the simplicity and convince of being able to connect with so many other people from the comfort of your own home or anywhere you are from a little device in your pocket, I believe it is a safer and more efficient alternative to bringing about social change than rallies and meetings or whatever else activists organize for this purpose. As time goes on hopefully social media will advance to better deal with its negative components and bring about positive social change for the future to come.
The widespread of access to technology has made it alot easier to connect people and bring them together for a cause. In the past, campaigns’ had to rely on word of mouth references or physical advertisements such as billboards to promote their cause. In the modern era, through the use of social media, a much larger audience can be reached. But, even with the popularity of social media, certain people might be excluded from participating. The non profit organization I am researching is 2-1-1 WNY, which is an organization that aids individuals in need with health and human services. With their social media campaigns they have the ability to spread the word to a large audience, but the people who need their services the most, for example those who are homeless, may not have a cell phone or access to any social media platforms. To resolve this organizations need to find a balance between social media and physical advertising.
