When It comes to using social media as a foundation for social change, there have been a number of successful advocacy campaigns that used various platforms to reach a large audience. One of the most memorable being the ALS ice bucket challenge that went viral all around the world in the summer of 2014. People everywhere were drenching themselves with ice water and volunteering their friends to participate. This was done in order to raise awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Videos of the ice bucket challenge could be found all throughout Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. This campaign definitely had the intended outcome and then some; racking up over $40 million in donations for the ALS Association just in the first summer, and raising awareness through many individuals such as myself who did not know much about the disease prior to this campaign.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS6ysDFTbLU Bill Gates Ice Bucket Challenge ...
Yes, I believe social media is turning us into “armchair activists.” This is because social media makes it easier to voice opinions on controversial issues. People feel a lot more comfortable disclosing how they truly feel from the comfort of their own home behind the safety of their screen, rather than in person. For one this may be a good thing, it helps them exercise their first amendment rights, for others they've used it as an excuse to be a “keyboard warrior,” this is someone who instigates problems with others through social media because they don't have fear of any immediate consequences. This has created lots of toxicity on various social media platforms, especially Facebook considering its large popularity in adults throughout the world. With social media’s growing population i don’t think there’s any way to prevent armchair activism from ensuing, it's just one of the social changes that was brought about through social media.
I believe that in this modern day and age social media has had a huge impact on the status quo. Social media has been used as a platform for everything from marketing businesses to sharing memes. Some people have used various social media platforms to bring people together on certain issues, while others unfortunately  use it to cyber bully people they may not even know. With all the positives social media brought us, obviously came the negatives; but this all ties into how social media has been used to bring about social change.  Sociologists define  social change  as  changes  in human interactions and relationships that transform cultural and  social  institutions. Social media has been able to connect individuals from across the world, this was not possible 20+ years ago, especially not in this magnitude. Being able to communicate with someone who lives across the globe allows one to step into their shoes and see life from their perspective an...
Hello "blogosphere"    My name is Gubaz Giorgadze, I am 18 years old, and currently an Undergrad student at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York. It is my second semester here at UB and I have still yet to declare my major, this is largely due to the fact that throughout my life no one thing ever stood out to me above the rest. I managed to be fairly decent at whatever I tried; weather it was various sports, arts, or subjects in school. I wasn't particularly great in anything but I've been getting by pretty well. But, the one thing I can proudly say I am an expert in is my culture.    I come from a small country hidden around the Caucasus Mountains of Eastern Europe, a country unbeknownst to most: The Republic of Georgia. In my blog I will write for the people who have an interest in learning about different cultures around the world. I will talk about Georgia's very diverse traditions, foods, and ways of life.    I've personally never blogged ...
