When It comes to using social media as a foundation for social change, there have been a number of successful advocacy campaigns that used various platforms to reach a large audience. One of the most memorable being the ALS ice bucket challenge that went viral all around the world in the summer of 2014. People everywhere were drenching themselves with ice water and volunteering their friends to participate. This was done in order to raise awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Videos of the ice bucket challenge could be found all throughout Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. This campaign definitely had the intended outcome and then some; racking up over $40 million in donations for the ALS Association just in the first summer, and raising awareness through many individuals such as myself who did not know much about the disease prior to this campaign.
